The Emerging Refugee Crisis

The number of people fleeing poverty, conflict, and persecution around the world is creating an unprecedented number of global migrants and refugees, & we are facing growing pressure to accommodate them not only within the U.S., but also right here in Wisconsin. In this interactive presentation, Professor Dokhanchi will discuss recent migration patterns, how they have shaped the current refugee crisis, & what can be learned from the example of asylum seekers in Germany. He will talk about the meanings of ‘displaced person,’ ‘refugee’ & ‘migrant,' and open a dialogue with participants to consider the refugee crisis from many angles. He'll also share an exhibit portraying the refugee experience. Dr. Khalil “Haji” Dokhanchi is a Professor of Political Science & the Social Inquiry Chair at the UW-Superior. He teaches a number of courses, including Paths to Peace, Theories of War and Peace, & Human Rights; and, his areas of research include reconciliation in post-conflict societies, human rights, & American foreign policy towards the Middle East.
