What makes poetry a unique art form? How do you write a poem? Why do poets break their lines how they do? If you have ever wondered about these questions, this is the space for you!

In this two-hour introductory workshop with instructor Deshawn McKinney, we will discuss what makes something a poem, the meaning behind line breaks, and ways to strengthen our imagery.  Participants will leave understanding the importance of being intentional with their writing, how to construct a poem using line breaks, how to get more powerful images, and some writing activities to take home.

About Deshawn McKinney:

Deshawn McKinney is a writer from Milwaukee, Wisconsin working in whatever medium is best to tell the story. His work appears in journals such as Lolwe, Ploughshares, and Glass: A Journal of Poetry. He served as the 2023 Writer in Residence for the Fourth Lake Writing Retreat and is a two time Pushcart Prize nominee. His debut chapbook, father forgive me, was published by Black Sunflowers Poetry Press in 2021.
