This year's Big Summer Read selection is The Family Chao by Lan Samantha Chang, and we are thrilled to host the author for a book talk at the library! Based loosely on The Brothers Karamazov The Family Chao tells the story of a Chinese American family living in the fictional town of Haven, WI.  The Chao family, who have owned 'Fine Chao' restaurant for thirty-five years, must reckon with family secrets and resentment after their patriarch, Leo is found dead.

Ms. Chang grew up in Appleton, Wisconsin. A twenty-fifth anniversary edition of her first collection, Hunger: A Novella and Stories was recently published by W.W. Norton & Company. She is also the author of All Is Forgotten, Nothing Is Lost and Inheritance, which won the PEN Open Book Award. The Family Chao, her most recent novel, was a winner of the Anisfield-Wolf Award for Fiction. Since 2006, Ms. Chang has directed the Iowa Writers' Workshop at the University of Iowa. She lives in Iowa City, Iowa, with her husband and daughter.
