Juneteenth has been increasingly in the news over the last several years, and is now recognized as a federal holiday. But what exactly is it, and why is is important? In this combined presentation and panel discussion, we'll learn about the history of Juneteenth and how it is recognized and celebrated today.
Dr. Christy Clark-Pujara, Professor and Director of Graduate Studies for the Department of African American Studies at the University of Wisconsin- Madison, will lead off with a presentation examining Juneteenth in a historical context:
Freedom came in waves for African Americans, and Black people initiated the process. Black Americans fought for their freedom in a myriad of ways before, during, and after the American Civil War. Juneteenth is a celebration of one of many ways that Black people attained and commemorate freedom. Juneteenth is also a consummate reminder of the strength and fragility of freedom in our nation. We will trace the history of Black Freedom in the United States and reflect on its legacies and the continued struggle for full freedom in the Black community.
The presentation will be followed by a panel discussion featuring local Black leaders who will share their thoughts on what Juneteenth means today.
